Getting DJ gigs: Developing a brand part two - Create a website

Creating a website is essential for brand development; it is a personal storehouse for all your information and what you represent as a DJ/producer. It is a “must-have” for a professional appearance online. In this blog, I will point out your options for creating a website.

Is creating a website difficult?

If you are anything like me and not the greatest of computer wizzes, creating a website yourself has never been easier. Gone are the days when you needed to spend thousands of dollars on a professional web designer to create your website. And, with certain web platform builders, you don't even have to know any special coding; I’ll go over this shortly. Being the perfectionist that I am, I dreaded creating a website at first, but once I started to do it, it become easy. As I worked my way around the platform, I actually started to become motivated and excited to see the final product.

What you need before the website

Before you get started with website creation, you need a domain name and a hosting provider. A domain name is, for example, your DJ or artist name then a .com or, etc. after it. You will first need to see if your name is available. I believe that the best way to see if the name you want to use is available is through This not only shows you if the name is available in a .com or format, it also checks to see if it is available for all your social media URLs, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and even YouTube and Spotify.

Namecheckr will not find the, but will find others, like To see if your domain name is available in, you will have to check with domain and hosting providers like:

Might I also suggest that if you are using a name like, for example, John Smith, and it happens to be taken, you could go with or or au.

Use the same-name URL across all platforms to avoid confusion when it comes to locating your name on social media, Soundcloud and the web. Make it universal. That’s why it is great to use, as it is essential for branding.

Domain and hosting packages

GoDaddy – I highly recommend this service, which can start from as little as $3.95 a month and work its way up to $20 plus in Australian dollars. This includes your domain name and the service to connect it to the website, not the actual website itself, which is separate. You might choose to use an all-in-one service (which I use), such as Squarespace or even Wix. (I will talk about this in a moment.) You will have to decide which website service you would like to use, as well as which domain and hosting service suits you. GoDaddy is suited to WordPress, which is a free website platform builder.

HostGator – This is another great domain and hosting provider. It’s a U.S-based company, and prices start from $5.98 a month, going up to $13.98 U.S. Check out the packages here to suit your requirements.

Prices are subject to change, and I encourage you to do your own research to see which option meets your needs.

Options for websites

WordPress – This is a free website platform builder which allows you to create your own personalised brand and blog. It is easy to use and one of the most popular website providers out there. There is no need to know any special coding; it can be pretty easy these days. You can make a $10,000-looking website for as little as $45 U.S. By simply heading to a website called Theme Forest, you can buy an awesome-looking pre-designed template that makes your website look killer. All you have to do is add you own images, blogs and videos.

Squarespace – This is the service I use, and I highly recommend it because it is so easy to use, even easier than WordPress. The downside is that it is the dearest option. Prices start from $8 a month and go up to $26 U.S. The upside is that it is an all-in-one option; you get your domain hosting and website in one place, which is super convenient and avoids any confusion with connecting services.
There are a lot of great tutorials on how to use this service to build the best customised personal website for your brand. You’ll have several templates to choose from.

Wix – Another great all-in-one service provider. You can build a free website with this service, but it comes with ads, which can turn some people off your website. I personally recommend that you buy a package that suits your requirements. Package prices start at $6 and go up to $20 U.S a month. There is also a yearly option. Wix is slightly cheaper than Squarespace, but your best bet with both is to do a free trial to see what you prefer for your online brand.

I hope this blog has helped. Feel free to ask me any questions. In the next blog, I will talk about what you need on your website.
